[Destiny 2] Bungie announces Transmog…yay? (Response to 4/22/2021 TWAB)

It’s that time of the week again, Bungie has released their weekly blog post about what is happening in the world of Destiny and what is going on at Bungie.

The major take away from this weeks post is that they’ve shared some more details on how the transmogrification system is going to work. For those that are unaware, transmogrification is a concept in video games that allows the player to change the appearance of their armor piece to look like any other armor piece that they may have encounter during their journey.

There are plenty of examples for this, but my favorite is Diablo 3. Any piece of armor that you unlock is available for transmogrification, and it only costs a bit of gold. Gold is a very common currency in Diablo 3, I often earn a couple billion each season playing casually. The point that I am trying to get across is that it is simple and easy, no hoops to jump through and no extra bullshit or money involved.

Bungie decided to take a different approach to this beloved system. They decided that first, it needs to be over complicated, because why make things simple for the player? In order to turn one of your favorite armor pieces in your collection into a universal ornament you need to follow these steps.

  1. Defeat enemies to earn Synthstrand.
  2. Spend Synthstrand on bounties to earn Synthcord.
  3. Convert Synthcord at the Loom in the Tower into Synthweave.
  4. Use Synthweave to convert an unlocked armor appearance (Legendary quality or lower) from Collections into a Universal Armor Ornament.

This seems pretty silly to me, why make the players kill a bunch of enemies to unlock the bounty that’s just going to make them do more objectives? I don’t understand why there’s so many moving parts required for something that seems so simple. Then again, it may not be as simple as I believe.

On top of that shit sandwich, they have limited the amount of pieces that people can convert for free. In one season we will be able to convert 20 pieces for free on each character. This is a decent amount, but it also sucks to see any sort of limit, since it means that you must be confident in every piece you pick. If you pick a piece, then realize it didn’t look as good as you had thought your SOL JWF, if you know you know.

Don’t get me wrong, I love that they are giving us the option to convert armor pieces into universal ornaments. This is something that I’ve wanted for a long time, often times I will sacrifice stats on my armor pieces for appearance.

But of course, there will be a paid option as well! Because why not? It will be $3 for an armor piece or $10 for a set. I don’t mind these prices, I just wish that it wasn’t based in eververse at all, and that it simply costed legendary shards.

I don’t want to simply piss and moan about what I dislike about the TWAB, I feel being overly negative is unfair to Bungie. I’m sure they have their reasons for doing it the way that they have.

On a more positive note, they also discussed the new shader system in this TWAB. I am very pleased with this new system, it is going to make playing “Dresstiny” much easier, and Dresstiny is half of the fun of Destiny. Who doesn’t want to look good whilst shooting aliens in the face?

All in all, I’m excited for the new season of Destiny. I can’t wait to see what Bungie has planned aside from VoG returning, transmog, and the new shader system!
